Shortly before Christmas the government published an update to the standard method for calculating housing targets and to help tackle the housing crisis.

Their original proposal - dubbed "the mutant algorithm" - would have seen huge numbers of new homes being built in the highest value areas which were typically represented by Conservative MPs. In the face of a wide spread revolt from backbenchers, the government has backtracked. fixing the figures to divert more house building to urban areas.

That might seem fine in theory, but the reality is many of those homes are unlikely to get built.In his latest piece for Housebuilder magazine our managing director, Paul Smith, explains how the government may have solved a political crisis, but exacerbated the housing one.
