Permitted Development Rights get a bad press. Much of the focus is on the poor quality schemes that they sometimes produce. Yet those schemes are usually the result of the way the rules surrounding the rights, rather than the principle of making it quicker and easier for buildings to change use.

Our town and city centres are currently going through a period of rapid change - and one which the pandemic has accelerated. Drafted correctly, permitted development rights can help our urban centres become more resilient and enhance their ability to react to those changes.
