Revealed: Greater Manchester Green Belt to be reviewed

A new report has revealed that the Greater Manchester Green Belt is set to be reviewed to allow the region to grow significantly over the coming years. This blog examines the reasons why and explains how you could benefit.

According to a report in Place North West, a review of the Green Belt in Greater Manchester is to be carried out. This review process will be part of the evidence used to underpin the new Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, which will guide development in the region for the next 20 years.

This news reflects comments made last night by Eamon Boylan, Chief Executive of Stockport Council, at a Conservative Party Conference fringe event organised by the Housing the Powerhouse campaign. Mr Boylan observed that at least 220,000 new homes will be needed across the 20 year plan period. Based on estimates of development capacity, around 70,000 to 80,000 of these homes will have to be delivered outside the current urban area of Greater Manchester. This, Mr Boylan concluded, will mean that there has to be a Green Belt review “at an appropriate point.” It seems that the appropriate point might have arrived.
