In the wake of coronavirus and the continued need for social distancing, active travel - walking and cycling - is becoming increasing important. Around the world, pop-up cycle lanes and widened footways are being used to re-allocate the space in our roads away from cars and towards people on foot or on bikes.

That is, though, just the latest stage in the growing recognition of the benefits of getting people out of their cars - from better air quality to lower levels of obesity, from higher spend in local shops to improved mental health.

In this latest episode of the 50 Shades of Planning podcast our managing director, Paul Smith, joins regular host Sam Stafford, street design guru Brian Deegan and transport expert Vanessa Eggleston to talk through the benefits of active travel and how the planning system can make sure it is delivered.
