Why the new NPPF is bad for the North

On the 5 March, the government began a consultation on a number of reforms to the planning system. The main aim of these changes was to tackle the housing crisis by finally building enough homes to meet demand. When taken in the round, however, the proposals are likely to be bad for the North.

The new approach to calculating housing targets and reforms to the rules for community infrastructure levy are likely to hamper, rather than encourage, economic growth across the North – reducing the potential for the Northern Powerhouse to re-balance the UK economy.
