The government is intent on improving the design quality of new homes. A journey that started with a greater importance on design quality in the first revision of the National Planning Policy Framework continued through the Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission and looks set to be central to the imminent reforms to the planning system.
That is a noble and important aim - nobody would seriously question the importance of ensuring the new homes we build are well designed. But it raises an important question - what does good design actually look like?
We carried out a survey of more than 800 people to try to find the answer.In this piece for Housebuilder magazine Paul Smith, our managing director, writes about the results.
