The government has placed design quality at the centre of its efforts to increase the supply of new homes. By ensuring that new homes are of the highest design standards, their expectation is that communities will be more supportive of housing development.

That approach raises an important question: what is good design?

In this research paper, we consider the views of the general public, property professionals and architects to a range of different house designs - from one-off, architect designed homes through to the standard product of the largest PLC developers.

Their responses help inform the debate as to how design standards should be judged, and what that means for the way we plan for new homes.
